In this introductory sampler, we’ve sought to honor some of the leading innovators—Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (Sassicaia) and his cousins, Lodovico (Ornellaia) and Piero Antinori (Tignanello)—of a modest movement that began simply enough as a desire to explore Toscana’s latent depth. The labels herein have continued to do just that vintage after vintage….
For a while, Tenuta San Guido was a one-wine estate—and for good reason. When you produce Sassicaia, there’s not much you can improve upon. In recent years, though, Sassicaia’s branched out a bit, affording a larger audience access to its legendary realm. Foremost among these efforts has been its second label, Guidalberto, an IWM favorite since its 2000 debut. In ’06, it is very closely modeled on Sassicaia, giving its premiere performance as a Cabernet Sauvignon–Merlot blend, and the resemblance is read in its polished intensity. Ornellaia’s got a second label of its own, and we’ve included it here to stir up a little vino rivalry between the houses. To complete the dynasty of the Antinori and della Rocchetta families, we’re also featuring the flagship of Piero Antinori’s Bolgheri estate, Guado al Tasso.
We’ve spent a lot of time with Super-Tuscan staple Camartina recently, revisiting some of its early and recent vintages. In terms of value, you’d be hard pressed to find another Super-Tuscan that delivers on Camartina’s level. We can’t tell you to put the ’99 away, because it’s a young Camartina at its most alluring. Fellow artisanal, biodynamic production Sammarco is another must-drink—a power Cabernet that would be perfectly in its element in a roomful of California Cabs. Finally, the ’99 Flaccianello is currently exhibiting a mature sensibility, captured in tertiary flavors underlain by those that harken back to the wine’s initial flavor spectrum.
