About
this Six-Bottle
Sampler :
Ales Kristancic is the ultimate biodynamic producer—a
radical and brilliant mind guided by lunar phases and dedicated
to crafting wines that are pure renderings of terroir.
Each of Ales’ wines captures Friuli’s grapes
in their native state, providing a raw articulation of
varietal essence and bravura. This sampler provides an
immersion course in Movia—a brilliant and soulful
gathering of Friuli’s White Knights….
Forget what you know about Pinot Grigio—Ales redefines
the category in two bottlings, finding the flavors that
elude so many. He also goes his own way with Sauvignon
Blanc, utilizing a clone found exclusively in one plot
of the Movia estate to produce a wine laden with floral
and tangerine notes—a compelling contrast to New
Zealand’s pungent and nervy Sauvignon crew.
During visits to the Movia estate, Sergio has tasted Ribollas
with Ales that date back to the fifties and sixties. The
hallmark grape of Friuli’s iconoclasts, Ales fashions
a rich interpretation that ages with astonishing grace.
While Ribolla enjoys the attentions of the winemaking set,
Tokai is the region’s signature wine—the quintessential
accompaniment to Friuli’s signature salumi and prosciutti. The
grape realizes an impressive stylistic breadth, ranging
from crisp to full; Kristancic’s version inhabits
the latter realm in its dense fruit—an overt contribution
from lees’ aging—and musk-infused aroma.
Despite this weighty constitution, it delivers a strikingly
fresh impression on the palate, displaying a cleansing,
acidic verve.
In addition to his monovarietal wonders, Movia also crafts
standout cuvées that reflect the rich style captured
by their solo-varietal relations. Each vintage of Movia’s “Great
White”—Veliko Belo in Slovenian—constitutes
a blend of varying proportions of Ribolla, Chardonnay,
Sauvignon, and Pinot Grigio that is aged for a three-year
period in oak. Is the new red white? At Movia, it seems
to be so….
