About
this Six-Bottle
Sampler :
Many of the cult wines that you’ve read
about herein didn’t start
out at their current figures. Granted, they
didn’t stay at a modest price
point for very long, but those early
vintages certainly weren’t too presumptuous
about their future earnings. Our sampler of
rare cult values features labels
that are—just like the expensive cult
collectibles—limited production.
The selection is also just as diverse as
the staples collection, representing
regions that you wouldn’t normally
associate with the cult set. Moreover,
each appreciates by the vintage and enjoys,
of course, a commensurate rise
in popularity. They still, though, offer
the thrill of being “insider
wines”—the one thing that those
established cults can’t
deliver….
Didn’t think that a white could be a
cult? Well, to be honest, La Castellada’s
Ribolla Gialla drinks like a
red—it’s a rich, honeyed wonder that
derives its unique character, in part, from
an extended maceration (a portion
of which is conducted on the skins).
Fascinating, absorbing, and wholly unique,
it inspires contemplation.
Quintarelli’s Alzero may inspire
fanatic devotion,
but his Valpolicella routinely wins over
the crowd at IWM events, with many
believing it to be an Amarone. Poggio di
Sotto’s Il Decennale is the
estate’s tour de force production,
but its Rosso di Montalcino may very
well be the tour de force of the entire
Rosso di Montalcino DOC (though the
fact it’s mistaken for Brunello might
disqualify it here).
Those Tuscan super Merlots are pure
seduction, but maybe you’d prefer
to engage with a more classic
interpretation. Dipoli’s Iugum (70% Merlot,
30% Cab) favors structure over sleek
design, and shows that Italy’s got
more than one way of succeeding with that
difficult grape.
And what about that Sicilian sparkler?
Made wholly from Sicilia’s indigenous
Nerello Mascalese, it’s one
of those little-known gems that’s won
quite a following.
This sampler is a cult collection for the
enthusiast—insider access
to wines that may be a few vintages away
from that cult utopia.
