About
this Six-Bottle Sampler:
The winemaking history of the Fattoria di Fubbiano estate
dates back to the 14th century. Fubbiano’s respect
for its formidable tradition informs its modern productions,
which reflect an artisanal philosophy and expression.
The estate also pursues very specific viticultural ideals,
adhering to an orientation that precludes the use of all
nonorganic products. This special sampler comprises three
of their unique offerings, each of which is nearly impossible
to find elsewhere, given the minute quantities produced.
Fubbiano's I Pampini debuted in 1995, with just under
200 cases making it to the US. While Sangiovese is the
principle varietal concerned here, Teroldego, an obscure
red grape from Trentino, makes a welcome, albeit rather
minor, contribution. Its generous expression and mild
tannins endow the Sangiovese-based I Pampini with greater
intensity and structure.
San Gennaro is a single-vineyard interpretation of the
traditional Chianti blend—Sangiovese, Canaiolo,
and Ciliegiolo. Dark ruby red in color and round in body,
this wine delivers persistent notes of red berries and
plums, and a touch of earth.
Vin Santo is Italy’s famous contribution to the
realm of sweet endings. In Fubbiano’s interpretation,
Vermentino takes the place of the wine’s regular
contributors—Malvasia
and Trebbiano—fashioning a unique standout from
the Colline Lucchesi Bianco DOC. Crafted from air-dried
grapes that are pressed and aged in small barrels for
three years, this is a decadent expression offering notes
of honey, caramel, and orange peel.
