About
this Six-Bottle
Sampler :
This unrivaled sampler captures the breadth and supremacy
of Italy’s cult genre through some of the category’s
most elite names, covering the artisanal, traditional,
and iconic. While you might think that Toscana owns the
Italian cult market, Italy’s cult offerings derive
from several regions, affording a range of diverse expressions.
What brings them together here, though—a main condition,
in fact, of their cult status— is their exceedingly
limited availability. The demand for these wines is so
out of proportion with supply that the wines attain mythic
proportions.
Such is the case, certainly, with Valentini and Quintarelli.
The former’s Montepulciano is one of Italy’s
most sought-after wines—a wild and provocative translation
of a grape that belies its status in the realm of casual
drinking. Quintarell’s Alzero does something quite
similar with Cabernet Franc, taking it to a place far beyond
its apparent reach.
Not all cults compel their followers with such dramatic
allure. Others inspire with their astute renderings of
terroir—like the late Valentino Migliorini’s
Pianpolvere Soprano—an esteemed Piemonte cru that
is regarded as one of the Nebbiolo grape’s most profound
and astute interpreters. Piero Palmucci’s Il Decennale
is, in effect, a viticultural thesis of a site he established
in a quest to produce the ideal authentic Brunello. It’s
the only one of its kind—a Tenth Anniversary homage
to what’s become a life-defining passion.
If your weakness if unbridled opulence, however, it’s
the icons you’ll keep vigil for, particularly one
of those killer Merlots that makes Toscana this grape’s
foremost champion. Le Macchiole’s Messorio belongs
to this class of extroverted Merlots that revel in Dionysian
bliss. Galardi’s garage wine, Terra di Lavoro, became
a cult sensation the first vintage out, acquiring a religious
following whose fervor doesn’t allow for many new
members.
This sampler is a cult utopia for the collector—extreme
access to wines that just don’t come on demand.
