About
this Six-Pack:
To celebrate the opening of Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich’s
Vegas venture—B&B Ristorante and Piazza San Marco,
and the recent opening of Osteria Mozza in Los Angeles—we
have compiled a six-pack of wines from the duo’s
winemaking estates.
Situated in the Colli Orientali region of Friuli, Azienda Agricola Bastianich produces varieties indigenous
to the area as well as more familiar grapes from the international scene. The
Vespa Rosso is a powerful Bordeaux-blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet
Franc, with the addition of the indigenous Refosco. Likewise, the Vespa Bianco
comprises Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and late-harvested indigenous Picolit.
The producer’s straight Tocai bottling is a fantastic pick for summer food pairing, and the Rosato is a superb choice for summer
quaffing.
Moving south along the Mediterranean coast, we arrive at the Maremma. Situated
around the Tuscan town of Scansano, this burgeoning area is the outpost for
the La Mozza estate. The premier grape of the region is Morellino, a clone
of Sangiovese that produces a wine softer than that typically derived from
Sangiovese proper. Morellino is the inspiring varietal figure behind the estate’s
flagship wine—I Perazzi. Aragone, the second wine in the estate’s
portfolio, is a mulitvarietal blend comprised of Morellino, Alicante, Syrah,
and Carignan, a composition that fulfills their desire to craft a wine that
wholly departs from the revered Super-Tuscan model.
So cheers to the Batali/Bastianich team as they expand their restaurant realm
