Italy's Indigenous Reds
There are more grapes in Italy’s vineyards than are dreamt of in most vino philosophies. While some, like Friuli's Refosco and Puglia's Uva di Troia may be known only to the most erudite oenophile, others like Alto Adige's Lagrein and Sicilia's Nero d'Avola are showing up at tastings with a fair degree of regularity, entering common vinospeak. Then, of course, there are those that could be the next grape idol, like Campania's Aglianico and Abruzzo's Montepulciano. It’s a veritable red grape field of dreams here.

Everyday Sippers
Consider this a comprehensive briefing on Italy's wine scene—a serious immersion that covers the Boot's vast varietal range in a custom IWM ensemble. It's a total team effort—a veritable winestorm that engages the indigenous celebrities, esoteric natives, and international favorites. It's style-minded, too: Old and New worlds, classic and modern, restrained and powerful—they're all at play for the pleasure of the couple's palate.

Six-Bottle Samplers

Tuscan Red Six Pack
Widely considered the epicenter of the Italian wine world, Tuscany is steeped in history yet simultaneously positioned at the forefront of the modernist movement. From varied expressions of Sangiovese—Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino—to the innovative Super Tuscans that broke with tradition, Tuscany's wines offer exceptional quality and style.

Everyday Piemonte Wines
This sampler includes Piemonte's reigning regional specialites, such as Barbera, Dolcetto, a "Super-Piemonte" blend, and a standout Nebbiolo-based Rosato.

|
Full-Bodied Reds
With more than 2,000 grape varieties from 20 regions, there is a lot to discover in Italy. Have them seeing several shades of red in this tribute to Italy’s many Rosso-colored wonders: from the pairing prowess of Piemonte's Barbera, to Campania's Aglianico—"The Barolo of the South"—to the powerfully provocative Nero d'Avola of Sicilia.

Pairings and Trios
|
Vintage Barolo Trio
1995 Vintage Barolo Trio: A hard year having endured two isolated hailstorms, which randered small yields and uneven fruit ripening and quality. An irregular vintage, but with highlights considered worthy of this special vintage streak.
1996 Barolo Trio: A great classic vintage that resulted in wines in style similar to the great 1978 and 1971 Barolos. These muscular wines are deeply colored, and aromatic with dense, rich fruit flavors, possessing the perfect structural components (tannins, acid, and alcohol), requiring time in the bottle. A favorite at IWM, as we consider this vintage the most age-worthy of the streak.
2000 Barolo Trio: This exceptional vintage is the darling of the media, as these wines exhibited lush fruit upon release, drawing attention away from the 1999. An exceptionally hot year in Piemonte proffered concentrated, approachable wines of generous color, sweet fruit, ripe tannin and sumptuous aromatics. Although wines from warmer years aren't typically suitable for long-term ageing, quality productions may benefit from cellaring.
2001 Barolo Trio: Experiencing the ideal conditions for Nebbiolo—hot days followed by cooler nights—grapes in '01 were allowed to ripen more gradually compared to the previous year. Although the wines from this vintage display ripe fruit aromas, structurally, they are more refined, balanced and elegant. A more classic example, benefiting from added maturity. Critically-acclaimed, this is another IWM favorite.

|
Super-Tuscan Pair
Super-Tuscan: It's a name that's stuck since some producers broke the rules and got involved with grapes outside the native circle and techniques that didn't quite keep tradition going. Their creative defiance inaugurated a category that represents some of the wine realm's most sought-after bottlings—Tenuta San Guido, Tenuta dell' Ornellaia... The success enjoyed by these legends has made it possible for this category to enjoy unmitigated growth, providing an impressive range of wines.

|
|
|
Il Palazzone Brunello di Montalcino Pair
The vineyards of Il Palazzone embrace 10 hectares high in the hills of Montalcino, which are believed to contribute to the extra bold character of this Sangiovese clone. For more than 10 years, the estate has been focusing its energy on just three bottlings—Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, and Rosso di Montalcino—both of which are very full-bodied and elegant. This duo includes a selection Il Palazzone's various offerings.
