Spreading Italian Wine Traditions and Gift-Giving Cheer

Tua Rita Redigaffi

In This Issue

A Note from Sergio
In Italy, the holiday season seems to stretch forever. From the beginning of December through to the first week in January, Italians celebrate pretty much non-stop. As a kid, the month-long series of holidays felt like a whirlwind of panettone, panforte, struffoli, and shiny paper-wrapped gifts, of course. As an adult, I still appreciate the holiday-only food, but it’s the wine that signifies the holidays to me. The many glasses of bubbly that my friends and family raise together as we toast, wish, recollect, and appreciate. The bottles of Barolo we give to each other for Christmas. The many save-for-that-special occasion wines I open and share because I feel expansive and because it’s tradition to do so.

This weekend, the first weekend in December, sees the real beginning of the holiday season, so I wanted to offer you a few very special ways to celebrate the holidays with an Italian flair. I’ve always run my business on the principle that I won’t sell wines that I myself don’t like, but the wines in the three samplers I’m offering this week are among my favorites. While these three samplers offer wines that represent the best of Italy, each one takes a different spin on what the best means.
First, we’re a taste of Toscana. These Sangiovese-based Tuscan wines are easy-drinking, highly versatile reds that complement food like no one’s business. They’re just perfect for the holiday pop-over visit. Next, our Portfolio Manager will work with you to assemble a case of indigenous reds, which are crafted from Italian varietals like Teroldego, Aglianico and Dolcetto that intrinsically embody Italy. Finally, we’re pleased to present a selection of wines that show you care enough to give-or get-the very best. Including selections like Conterno’s Barolo Granbussia, Gaja’s Sori San Lorenzo, and Bartolo Mascarello’s Barolo, these are wines that live long and prosper, for they will appreciate in value as you will appreciate them in the future. To make these samplers even sweeter, we’re offering each at a special holiday price.

It's a long, beautiful holiday season. Whatever way you celebrate your holidays, and whichever holidays you celebrate, we here at IWM wish you and yours the happiest, merriest, most joyous-and most Italian-of celebrations.

My Best,
Sergio

Tuscan Wines for the Holiday This collection, personally selected by Sergio, will not only broaden the scope of Tuscan wines and the signature Sangiovese grape, but it will also do so with value and immediate approachability. Italy’s Indigenous Red Varietals

Indigenous Reds Six Bottle Sampler There’s a vast varietal world beyond Piemonte’s Nebbiolo and Toscana’s Sangiovese. Italy’s vast region of reds covers a panoramic landscape of stylistic terroir. Get grounded here and become a native speaker. Campania’s Aglianico established the South’s credentials, and the almost-famous Sagrantino of Umbria is now the red-to-know wine of the moment. Alto Adige’s Lagrein has already arrived, as has Syrah’s Sicilian cousin, Nero d’Avola. No matter whether you purchase on-line and allow us to surprise you, or call your Portfolio Manager to assemble this sampler, you'll be enjoying wine that could only come from one land—Italy. The sampler also includes a soft cover copy of Vino Italiano Buying Guide.

Rare Wine Case: Wines Built to Last

Tua Rita Redigaffi When you think of a monument to wine, what bottles come to mind? The 1937 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the 1945 Château Mouton-Rothschild, or the 1947 Château Cheval Blanc? These are, more than likely, the usual suspects. And it's just as likely that you seek the annual new releases of these wines for your cellar. Why? Because these are names that have become cellar staples; they are the blue-chip wines of longevity that will appreciate in value as they mature. Classic expressions that integrate acidity, tannins, and fruit, they are the wines that intimate their future brilliance upon release but show their full merit only after several years—sometimes decades—of cellaring. We wait for them to age because doing so allows us to experience them in their most perfect, revealing, and moving form. These twelve Italian wines are cellar staples that provide ideal translations of their respective terroirs, varietals, and vintages—and each one reflects its own essence with remarkable clarity and detail. Of course, every vintage has proven to age brilliantly. These are wines for serious connoisseurs and aspiring enthusiasts—wines for special occasions, wines that are certain to pique the senses, elicit conversation, and provoke thought. And, given time, these staples will ascend the ranks, reaching monumental stature.
