Zenato Sergio Zenato founded his eponymous winery in 1960, originally commencing production in the Veneto's Lugana DOC, which is situated south of Lake Garda. As the latter exerts a moderating influence on the climate, the area is conducive to viticulture and affords a particularly desirable environment for the production of Trebbiano di Lugana. Zenato maintains 40 hectares dedicated to this varietal, which was esteemed in ancient times, most notably in Bacci's De
Naturali Historia Vinorum. Zenato's San
Benedetto bottling is regarded as one of the foremost expressions of this varietal. Zenato continues to explore and work towards recapturing this grape's former glory through an experimental vineyard planted to a clone of Trebbiano, established in cooperation with the University of Milan.
Zenato also has a notable presence in the well-known Valpolicella DOC of the Veneto, though it commenced vineyard planting in this zone in 1975 (presently totaling 20 hectares), prior to Amarone's enjoyment of revered status. Zenato produces the full range of classic Valpolicella wines, including Valpolicella, Ripassa Valpolicella, and Amarone della Valpolicella.
