San
Patrignano This “community against ostracism”
is much, much more than a winery. The largest organization
of its kind in Italy, San Patrignano welcomes people directly
and indirectly affected by all casts of addiction problems
and brings them into a community where they earn dignity
and responsibility. A cardinal part of this process is professional
formation in one of the community’s many production
disciplines – in wine, furniture, textiles, cheese,
crafts, livestock, graphics, the fine arts, technology,
and more – which make San Patrignano financially independent
and allow new members to join the organization without charge.
Rehabilitated individuals leave the community confident
and well prepared to rejoin society.
This unconventional estate has consistently
impressed enophiles and wine critics worldwide since its
inception in 1978, and founder Vincenzo Muccioli envisioned
the winery as a link to tie community members to the land.
The accomplishments at San Patrignano inspired renowned
consultant Riccardo Cotarella to join the team pro bono,
an addition that heightened their already impressive results
in the cellar overseen by Vincenzo’s son Andrea. From
more than 100 ha of vineyards in the Rimini hills come just
a few wines; the most important are Montepirolo and Noi,
both blends that include international varietals, and Avi,
the estate’s pure expression of Sangiovese. Every
bottling communicates the dedication of the workers and
their profound love of the land.
