Poggio Antico Located in Montalcino, 50 kilometers
south of Siena, the Poggio Antico estate contains records
dating back to the early 19th century. However, vineyards
weren't planted until the late 1970's, when construction
of the wine cellar began. What makes this estate truly unique
is the elevation at which it sits, an impressive 450 meters
above sea level. At this height, there are steady breezes
helping to prevent fog and early frosts, also drying the
grapes after every rain, forestalling the development of
mold. The altitude of this site, combined with its uncommon
calcareous and rocky soil, has given the wines of Poggio
Antico their distinct character and brilliance. In 1984
the estate was purchased by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder,
who saw the unparalleled potential of this one-of-a kind
location. Paola, their youngest daughter, has managed the
estate since 1987; she is a firm believer in the importance
of the grapes and only allows the very best to make it through
her rigorous 3-step pruning process, resulting in high-quality
wine from low yields.
