Planeta In July, 2004, people all across Italy toasted the tenth birthday
of Planeta, the estate that brought new life to the wine of
Sicilia. Though young, this estate is already renowned for
its quality wines.
It was near Lake Arancio in the Sicilian countryside, where
the island’s oldest vines are found, that Francesca,
Alessio, and Santi Planeta first established themselves ten
years ago and now know as Cantina Ulmo. They have since added
land in Menfi, Cantina Dispensa, where they grow Merlot, Syrah,
and Cabernet Sauvignon, and further south in Vittoria, Cantina
Dorilli, where they produce Cerasuolo, their first DOC wine.
Their most recent expansion was in Noto, known as Cantina Buonivini,
where they produce Moscato di Noto and the Santa Cecilia,
which was previously a blend of Syrah and Nero d'Avola, but is now 100% Nero d'Avola. With
350 total hectares planted in these strong viticultural areas,
the Planeta family has already earned such prestigious awards
as the Gambero Rosso 1999 Producer of the Year and numerous
other accolades worldwide.
