Palombo Lazio’s whites may be a fairly vapid lot, dominated
by variations of Trebbiano, and it may want for any reds
to call its own. However, certain primary varietals of
other Italian regions as well as international favorites
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot more than validate Lazio’s
viticultural efforts.
While the full-bodied, extracted Cabernets and Merlots
of famed wine consultant Riccardo Cotarella are the most
well known of Lazio’s reds, other producers are fashioning
bottlings in a more restrained vein. Giovanni Palombo,
situated in the DOC area of Atina, is one of those whose
wines operate in a more conservative mode, displaying structure
that will allow for development. Atina, in fact, has a
fairly long-term history with Cabernet, having been cultivated
there for more than one hundred years. Two of Palombo’s
noted wines are Colle della Torre, a Merlot–Cabernet
Sauvignon blend and Rosso delle Chiaie, a monovarietal
Cabernet. Palombo has also distinguished itself through
its work with Malvasia, eliciting the persona that is the
exclusive province of certain clones and low yields.
