Mionetto The leading white and red of the Veneto region provide
a consummate study in contrast, with the distance between
the two placing them at opposite ends of a broad stylistic
spectrum. While the former is mass produced, the latter
is an artisanal expression and one of Italy and the world’s
most revered wines. While the white in question, Prosecco,
may seem negligible when placed alongside Amarone, its
place in the Veneto is not superfluous, as the region affords
beneficent interaction between cool mountain breezes and
a warm ocean influence. Thus, the production of sparkling
wine is hardly superfluous, as the Colli Trevigiani (the
area situated between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene), is
particularly conducive to the production of sparkling wines.
Mionetto’s raison d’être is essentially
Prosecco, and its portfolio attests to the nuances of expression
that various site selections may afford. Three of Mionetto’s
five categories are virtually dedicated to Prosecco, and
the premier line—MO—features bottlings
that have been sourced from select areas. Most notable
among the latter is the Cartizze bottling, as the vineyards
comprising Cartizze’s
viticultural area represent Veneto’s premier crus. The
Sergio Spumante is another significant selection, as it
honors a blend conceived by Francesco Mionetto, who established
the eponymous winery in 1887. In addition to Prosecco,
this historic blend features Chardonnay and two “old” grape
varieties, Verdiso and Blanchetta. Mionetto
also produces a “Traditional” line that features
the classic style of Prosecco for which the region is famed,
as well as four still wines.
