Grattamacco
- ColleMassari Piermario Meletti Cavallari has always
been an enophile. He was very content in his wine store
in Bergamo but knew that he had a further calling, so he
set out to find a vineyard that he could make his own. When
he saw Grattamacco he knew immediately that he had found
the right place, so he settled in and began producing wine.
The 1982 Grattamacco was Cavallari's debut, and his subsequent
wines have built him a well-deserved reputation as one of
Bolgheri's greatest producers.
With the help of Claudio Tipa and consultant
Maurizio Castelli, Cavallari is now consistently producing
impressive Super Tuscans: his evocative Bolgheri Rosso is
an opulent 50/50 blend of sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon.
He also makes a Bolgheri Bianco, a crisp, clean wine made
from vermentino. Grattamacco has managed to keep its prices
down because it has remained less conspicuous than its neighbors
Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Antinori despite its outstanding
wines.
