D'Angelo Basilicata is essentially a one-wine region, yet this exclusive
focus produces one of Italy’s most renowned wines—Aglianico
del Vulture, which operates on a qualitative par with the
slightly more famous Taurasi of Campania. A dense population
of vineyards exists on the eastern side of Monte Vulture,
and the elements afforded by its unique terroir—volcanic
soils and high altitude—fashion grapes with significant
concentration and good acidity. Production of Aglianico del
Vulture is very limited, and commercial operation is led by
two producers, Paternoster and D’Angelo, both of whom
have been at the forefront of Basilicata’s operation
since their establishment in the 1920s.
D’Angelo crafts what is arguably the zone’s most
famous bottling—Canneto. As harvest commences very late
in the season, the grapes achieve a complex profile, realizing
Aglianico’s hallmark contrast between dense flavor and
fragrant perfume. D’Angelo also crafts a Chardonnay/Pinot
Bianco blend that receives very limited release on the international
market, and a moderately priced line of wines based on the
Aglianico grape.
