Colle Picchioni
While Lazio has yet to distinguish itself via a specific
varietal or subregion, it does possess a small coterie
of producers who are endeavoring to alter its prevailing
image as a scene defined primarily by quaffable whites.
Colle Piccihioni, in fact, was founded by Paola di Mauro
in an effort to substantively upgrade the reputation of
Lazio’s wines, and her efforts have been foremost
among those undertaken.
While the vast extent of Lazio’s production is white,
many believe that it shows a distinct propensity for the
cultivation of reds. Colle Picchioni’s Vigna del
Vassallo, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, attests to this largely unrealized
potential, as it has actually merited comparison to the
great wines of Bordeaux.
