Col
d'Orcia Tenuta Col d’Orcia lies in the
territory secured in the early 17th century by the noble
Sienese family Della Ciaia. After passing through several
different hands, the lands were dedicated to winemaking,
and in 1933 the First Exhibition of Italian Wine saw three
vintages of Brunello under the estate name Fattoria di Sant’Angelo
in Colle. In 1973 the estate adopted its new name under
the ownership of Count Alberto Marone Cinzano (of the famous
Cinzano vermouth family), who was determined to show the
world how deserving Brunello was of admiration. Count Francesco
Marone Cinzano is the current president of the organization,
and Edoardo Virano governs production with the help of in-house
enologist Pablo Härri and consultant Maurizio Castelli.
Col d’Orcia covers 540 hectares in Montalcino,
of which 142 are planted to vines, from the Orcia River
to Sant’Angelo in Colle. As well as producing outstanding
wines, the estate is constantly involved in research,
the main goal of which is to optimize the quality of the
fruit they grow. Together with the University of Florence
and Professor Attilio Scienza of the University of Milan,
they study planting systems, clonal selection, and coupling
vines with their ideal terroir. The resulting discoveries
feed further developments in their Brunello, Rosso, and
Moscadello di Montalcino, Super Tuscans, Sant’Antimo,
and Chianti.
