About the Producer:
Paolo
Monte founded his eponymous winery upon acquiring Cascina
Flino in 1993. Situated in the commune of Diano d'Alba,
the property comprises six hectares, 3.5 of which constitute
vineyards planted to Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, and
Sauvignon Blanc. Beginning in 2003, the winery leased
a small property in Verduno for the production of Barolo,
which received its market debut this year. In addition
to wine production (with an annual total of approximately
7,000 bottles), Cascina Flino operates as an agriturismo,
a farm that enjoys a second career as a vacation dwelling,
providing accommodations, services, and amenities in
an ostensibly rustic context—i.e., many of these
rural retreats are quite upscale, on par with the exclusive
nature, atmosphere, and provision of luxury vacation
establishments. The agriturismo was officially recognized
in 1985 as a genre of travel experience in Italy, having
been established as a means of subsidizing the small
farmer’s income, which had diminished substantively
in the 1950s, continuing through the ‘70s.
