Bastianich
In 1998 restaurateur Joseph Bastianich with his mother,
the renowned chef Lidia Bastianich, bought a vineyard
in Buttrio, a town in the Colli Orientali DOC area;
the Azienda Agricola Bastianich presented its first
impressive vintage in 1999 and has achieved notable
success, earning the coveted Gambero Rosso Three-Glass
award.
The family is very precise in their winemaking, controlling
yields so that each individual vine produces one bottle of
wine. They employ traditional manual methods in the vineyard
and create wines that express the unique character of the
land.
Vespa Bianco is the estate's primary wine, an excellent demonstration
of the potential Friulian wine has for power and evolution;
both this and the Vespa Rosso are blends of finished wines
rather than "field blends," meaning that the different
varieties are combined after fermentation. Tocai Plus
is a powerful white that is enhanced through partial appassimento
or drying and, ideally, with grapes affected by noble rot.
The Bastianich estate reserve wine, Calabrone Rosso,
is released only when conditions are ideal for growing and
appassimento, allowing for a great intensity in this
blend of Refosco, Pignolo, and Cabernet Franc.
