Agostina Pieri Once Francesco Monaci identified a site that satisfied his specifications
(1991), beginning a long-desired contribution to Montalcino’s elite,
many wine enthusiasts began the long-term wait to acquire his wines.
It’s not surprising that Monaci stirred demand for his wines in
the initial years of their release. As the nephew of Giancarlo Pacenti—the
president of Montalcino’s Consorzio and informal leader of Brunello’s
new generation—Monaci had a significant qualitative precedent to
uphold.
Monaci’s site of seven-acres, situated in the village of Castelnuovo
dell’Abate, features unobstructed southern exposure, the perfect
viticultural context for Monaci’s old and low-yielding Sangiovese
vines. A strict sorting process ensures that only the best
of this inherently high-quality source is utilized, and the aging regimen
incorporates both Slavonian oak and French barriques. Francesco
firmly advocates the barrique aging of Montalcino’s wines, a stylistic
preference that even informs his handling of the Rosso, which is known
for its Brunello-like character. In fact, Monaci bestows upon his Rosso
the attentions that others reserve for their Brunellos, achieving a concentration
that derives, in part, from barrique treatment. It is interesting to
note that Pieri’s
1995 Rosso became the first wine of this designation to earn
the Tre Bicchieri award. Barrique aging accounts, in part, for the Rosso’s
concentration. The Brunello is normally aged in second- or
third-passage barriques.
This provides the perfect viticultural
context for his old- and low-yielding Sangiovese vines, which realize
a marked degree of ripeness. A strict sorting process ensures that only
the best of this inherently high-quality source is utilized, and the
aging regimen incorporates both Slavonian oak and French barriques. Francesco
firmly advocates barrique aging of Montalcino’s wines, a stylistic
preference that even informs his handling of the Rosso. The Brunello’s
aging regimen is conducted in both Slavonian oak and French barrique
over an 18-month period and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. While
it exhibits demonstrative concentration, his incisive use of oak ensures
balance.
