Babbo Wine Dinners
IWM is pleased to announce our partnering effort with Babbo to bring vintage Italian wine to the enthusiast. Vintage Babbo is a new wine seminar and tasting series held at our sister restaurant. Presented by Joe Bastianich and Luca Pasquinelli, these Monday evening events are open to the public and feature rare wine selections, as well as a tasting menu designed specially by Mario Batali. The tastings are meditations on the history and evolution of Italian wine, presenting the opportunity to taste the rare, the classic, and the difficult-to-find gems of the Boot with food that magnifies the enjoyment of each sip.

Throughout the twentieth century, the region of Abruzzo wasn’t known for being a source of profound wines. Nevertheless, there were two producers—Edoardo Valentini and Emidio Pepe—who not only defied Abruzzo’s reputation, but the assumed limitations of the grapes they worked with as well. Indeed, these two mavericks performed on the level of Italy’s best producers. With the passing of Edoardo Valentini in 2006, Emidio Pepe became the sole practitioner of a winemaking style that reflects a bygone time, predating international markets and all the hype that came with them. His wines are the purest expression of both nature and the vintage: In addition to omitting all herbicides and pesticides, Pepe conducts fermentation without the use of temperature control, using only the natural yeast from the vineyard. His approach yields wines that are rich yet elegant, subtle, complex, and ageworthy.

Join us on July 21 for a Vintage Babbo dinner celebrating three decades of the whites and reds of Emidio Pepe, including the 1977, 1983, and 1985 vintages of his Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
