The Todi Castle Estate resides in the central province of Umbria-Italy's "Green Heart." Restored and presided over by the Santoro family, the Castle is encircled by vineyards, olive groves, and the rugged countryside extending between the historic towns of Todi and Orvieto.
The Estate's centerpiece is Castello di Todi, a 13th-century fortress positioned on a hilltop overlooking the eponymous medieval town. The Castle originated in Roman times, and was converted to a monastery in the 16th century. Today, this nationally recognized landmark provides striking views from its highest point, the Tower of Orlando. In addition to the Castle, the 45-acre estate comprises three other properties, Villa Pianesante, Villa Cipresso, and Villa Campo Rinaldo.
The Experience
Removed from the mayhem of modernity and the pressures of urban life, this region offers sanctuary from real time. Running off-the-clock and outside the mainstream, the past makes its presence known throughout the castle's grounds and interior spaces.
Accommodations
The Estate may accommodate over 40 guests, and offers the following selection of properties:
CASTELLO DI TODI
The North Wing of the Castle has provisions for up to ten guests, and is comprised of a large suite, a loft, and three large rooms. The West Wing houses a private apartment with space for three guests. Each suite/room projects a distinct identity, accentuated with elements and fixtures that convey a certain style and mood and inform each space's sitting area and private bathroom. The restored Castle evokes its medieval persona through period antiques and decorations, yet recognizes modernity's necessary contribution in a full catalogue of amenities, including satellite TV, Internet access, and fully equipped kitchens.
VILLA PIANESANTE
Situated approximately a mile from the Castle, the recently restored 17th-century Villa Pianesante projects the atmosphere of a traditional rural Umbrian house. A self-contained property with accommodations for up to ten guests, the villa offers five large suites (with private bathrooms), three living/sitting rooms, and a fully equipped kitchen. It also provides a swimming pool, two patios, and a rustic wood pizza oven.
VILLA CIPRESSO
While having served for centuries as an oil mill, the property was converted into two adjacent villas that are intended to be rented together. The larger of the two offers three rooms, four full bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and an outdoor patio. The smaller villa
contains two bedrooms, a sitting room with fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen, and an outdoor patio. The villas share an outdoor swimming pool outfitted with a covered patio and outdoor fireplace.
VILLA CAMPO RINALDO
Overlooking the Umbrian Valley, this spacious residence offers four large bedrooms (with private bathroom), a comfortable living/dining room with an open fireplace, a library, a fully equipped kitchen, two patios, and a private swimming pool.
Activities
This realm offers the wine enthusiast a full expanse of epicurean pursuits to undertake. Guests may engage in winery tours, peruse specialty food shops and outdoor markets, and dine in destination restaurants. Educational focus tastings of wine, olive oil, truffles, and wild
boar illuminate the region's specialties and provide a context for more fully engaging with the lunches and dinners prepared by the estate chef.
The athletically inclined may hike or bike ride through the hills and valleys of the Umbrian countryside. Sybarites may seek the revitalizing and stimulating refuge of a luxury day spa situated within the unique environs of a medieval castle.
Surrounding Area
Estate staff will transport guests on day trips to Rome and Florence; the factory outlet stores of designers such as Prada, Gucci, and Armani; and towns of historic and cultural importance, such as Todi, Spoleto, Orvieto, Assisi, and Cortona. The region is also famous for the annual Umbrian Jazz Festival and Spoleto Music Festival.
