A Masters Program with Honors
Italian Food
& Wine Events
Rocca (Bologna), Emilia-Romagna
November 21st
With all the recent negative press about the Sangiovese
controversy in Montalcino these days, mostly spin, here
comes the announcement of the 8th edition of the Master
del Sangiovese, a wine Masters competition fully dedicated
to honoring the country’s most cultivated varietal,
removing any doubt on how serious Italians are about their
Sangiovese in purezza.
The prestigious national competition will take place next
Tuesday, November 25th in Emilia-Romagna’s Rocca di
Dozza, a medieval fortress located in the hills of Bologna
and the headquarters of the Regional Enoteca— organizer
of the event along with the regional Consortium and the
Italian National Sommelier Association. Twenty sommeliers
from various regions, including 6 representing the host
region, will have to pass a comprehensive day of examination
that will include sensory analysis, food and wine parings
and a written examination testing on their knowledge of
history, laws, cultivation, vinification, soil and climate
characteristics of the varietal in Italy and around the
world. The final four candidates will content in a tasting
open to the public of three celebrated Sangiovese wines,
in addition to their skills in menu pairing, mastering a
Sangiovese wine list, service and decanting techniques.
The preceding judging committee will be comprised of: Terenzio
Medri and Roberto Gardini, President and Head of Competitions
for National Sommelier Association, Giordano Zinzani, President
of the Regional Consortium and Enologist Association, Gian
Alfonso Roda, President of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Enoteca,
Gian Carlo Mondini, President of the regional chapter of
National Sommelier Association, Ivano Antonini, first-place
