Orcia: Presenting
the New Vintages
Italian Food
& Wine Events
San Quirico (Siena), Toscana
December 4th
The 4th Annual Divin Orcia will take place on Saturday,
December 6th in the historical town of San Quirico d’Orcia,
an event dedicated to the relatively new Orcia DOC appellation
representing an ancinet territorio composed of 13
communes southwest of Siena, among which the legendary Montalcino.
The day long tasting will take place in the splendid townhall,
Palazzo Chigi Zondadari, and will showcase the 2005, 2006
and 2007 vintages of the Consorzio Vino Orcia member
wineries: Tenuta Belsedere, La Canonica, Capitoni Marco,
Campotondo, Il Colle, Donatella
Cinelli Colombini, Azienda Forte, Podernuovo, Poggio
al Vento, Poggio Grande, Il Pozzo, Azienda Resta, San Savino,
SassodiSole, Sonia Mencarelli, Sampieri del Fà and
Trequanda.
The Val d’Orcia is one of the most fascinating areas
of Toscana, a favorite among painters of the Italian Rennaissance
and a Unesco World Heritage site since 2004. A sort of imaginary
bridge connecting the cities of Montalcino and Montepulciano
it extends as far as Monte Amiata, presenting the perfect
scenery to incite any student or enthusiast of photography.
The various altitudes and exposures that characterize the
landscape give an insight into the area’s unique expressions
of Sangiovese—the main local varietal allowed in the
composition of the Orcia DOC (60% minimum) that may be complemented
by Colorino, Canaiolo, and Malvasia (Nera and Foglia
Tonda), in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and
Syrah. Also produced under the Orcia appellation are a Trebbiano-based
white and VinSanto, the latter with deep-rooted traditions
in this part of the region.
