Valtellina:
2008 Harvest Report
Wine Stats News
Sondrio, Lombardia
December 17th
The official harvest numbers for the Valtellina area are in,
as reported by the press office of the governing consortium,
Consorzio Tutela Vini Valtellina. The overall quality
of the crop was good with yield per hectare numbers well below
the required local appellations’ limits—which
include the Sforzato di Valtellina and Valtellina Superiore
DOCGs, Valtellina Rosso DOC and Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio
IGT—but reporting a significant drop in production quantity
from the previous year.
A challenging year, therefore, for local producers who had
to work diligently in the vineyard against harsh weather conditions,
scrupulously selecting the best bunches and acting quickly
to successfully avoid major damage. The report confirms the
Consortium original estimates: the overall quality of the
grapes is good, with low yields throughout the area. The final
product is expected to give great results in the bottle, but
with a significant decrease in production quantity, overall
24% less than 2007 and up to 50% in some areas.
Following is the Consortium official data for the 2008 harvest
