A
Rave Review of Vino Nobile
After organizing
and enjoying a tasting of 2001 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
and 2000 Vino Nobile Riserva, Spanish journalist Juancho Asenjo
reminded the world that this oft-forgotten wine is one of
Italy’s great gems and should not be relegated to second-class
status. Asenjo, who writes for the illustrious Elmundovino
wine site, went beyond the common nod to the progress made
over the last few years in Montepulciano and the clear potential
for further development there; he noted that despite vast
improvements in quality the wine is still sold at very reasonable
prices, making it one of the best values on the market. The
problem as he sees it is that Vino Nobile has been eclipsed
by its neighbors, especially Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti
Classico, that have greater name recognition. Asenjo is optimistic,
however, that the efforts of top producers like Avignonesi,
Paterno, Il Faggeto, Fattoria del Cerro, Antinori, Villa Sant’Anna,
and Baroncini will inspire others to focus on improved quality,
therefore allowing for a greater market presence and thus
an opportunity to showcase the merits of Vino Nobile worldwide.
