Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino

Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino :
[pohj-jo ahn-tee-ko]

What makes the Poggio Antico estate truly unique is the elevation at which it sits—an impressive 450 meters above sea level. At this height, there are steady breezes helping to prevent fog and early frosts, drying the grapes after every rain, forestalling the development of mold. The altitude of this site, combined with its uncommon calcareous and rocky soil, has given the wines of Poggio Antico, particularly the Brunello di Montalcino, ideal growing conditions to produce their distinct character and brilliance.

Located in Montalcino, 50 kilometers south of Siena, the Poggio Antico estate contains records dating back to the early 19th century. However, vineyards weren't planted until the late 1970's when construction of the wine cellar began. In 1984 the estate was purchased by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder, who saw the unparalleled potential of this one-of-a kind location. Paola, their youngest daughter, has managed the estate since 1987; she is a firm believer in the importance of the grapes and only allows the very best to make it through her rigorous 3-step pruning process, resulting in high-quality wine from low yields. Plastic crates are utilized for transferring grapes from the vineyards to the cellar, which is located in the center of the estate, allowing the crates only a short distance to travel. This ensures quality and prevents damage to the grapes.

The wine is aged for a total of 48 months, 36 of which take place in Slavonian oak barrels. The traditional oak adds to the structure and aging potential of the wine. Furthermore, prior to release the wine spends a minimum of 12 months in the bottles. The result is both elegant and age-worthy.
