Pianpolvere Soprano Barolo Bussia Riserva

Pianpolvere Soprano Barolo Bussia Riserva:
[pyahn-pol-veh-(l)ree]

Valentino Migliorini was one of Piemonte’s most profound agents of transformation: By virtue of his dynamic personality, he merited acceptance in the land most resistant to change, and his estate portfolio inspired many of Piemonte’s great winemakers to acknowledge, and, in some instances, validate interpretations of Barolo that defied its traditional conception. Migliorini’s recent passing (in December of 2007) is a tremendous loss not only to the Italian wine community but to the wine realm at large. Rodolfo Migliorini worked closely with his father for several years and is firmly committed to directing production wholly in accordance with Valentino’s methodology and philosophy. Moreover, there remain many wines that have been crafted under his care, including the Pianpolvere Soprano 1999 Barolo Bussia Riserva (released in 2006) and the Barolo Riserva 1999 Madonna Assunta La Villa (a cru wine that will be released in 2009).

Valentino acquired the historic site of Pianpolvere in 1998 with the intention of crafting a wine of substantive longevity. Founded by Paolo Fenocchio (who derived the name from the gun-powder magazines built in the area during Napoleon’s time), Pianpolvere is regarded as one of the Langhe’s “grand crus.” This reputation was established by Renato Ratti (who developed a map identifying all of the Barolo and Barbaresco crus, describing Pianpolvere Soprano as a subzone displaying “remarkable characteristics”) and notably confirmed in contemporary Piemonte by Bruno Giacosa, who believes Pianpolvere possesses one of the region’s most significant terroirs. Situated in the Monforte d’Alba commune of Bussia province, the site rests at an average elevation of 350 meters. Piemonte’s old guard recognizes the site as being an exceptional one for Nebbiolo, given both the microclimate concerned and the soil’s capacity for water retention. The ’99 Pianpolvere Soprano represents a joint effort between the Fenocchio and Migliorini families (the aging alone was conducted exclusively under Valentino’s supervision).
