Conterno-Fantino
Monprà :
[kon-tehr-no fahn-tee-no mon-prah]
The collaboration that is Conterno-Fantino, established
in 1982 through the partnership of Claudio Conterno
and the family of Guido Fantino, produces Barolos
that are mindful of tradition—wines in which
innovation is unobtrusive, serving as a conduit for
the evocation of place. The Sorì Ginestra cru
was the core of their initial efforts, followed by
the establishment of the nearby Vigna del Gris, which,
like Sorì Ginestra, is situated on the historic
Ginestra hillside. While their early work was defined
by an adherence to the traditional approach established
by their parents, in 1985, Claudio and Guido undertook
experimentation with a Nebbiolo/Barbera blend—a
move that was to take the form of the legendary Super-Piemonte
Monprà, which they aged in barrique. In 1994,
they built a state-of-the-art winery in the Bricco
Bastia area, bringing innovation and technology to
their masterful work with Nebbiolo. While they remain
at the forefront of advancement in quality winemaking,
their noninterventionist methodology translates the
genuine nature of the Nebbiolo grape.
Conterno-Fantino's 1990 Monprà presents notes
of black fruit, sweet tobacco, licorice, black pepper,
and hints of mint. Anise and cocoa are particularly
marked on the finish.
